Uilkossie Story

Uilkossie came to Tin Can Town approximately two years ago. He was picked up in a cold field. His eyes were still blue nd his jaw was skew. We can only speculate about what the poor the dog went through before being found.

The jaw was placed back into position. However, within two weeks, Clarina Hanekom noticed something strange happening when he wanted to eat. Uilkossie ran around and screamed. At first, they thought there was something wrong with his food.

But no, Uilkossie was getting seizures. The veterinarian has placed him on phenobarbitone which went out of stock and currently, Uilkossie is on pexion with less than a month worth of dosages left.

Then Uilkossie started growing. And what Tin Can Town thought was unfortunate, but cute bow-leggedness in his hind legs, turned out to be double luxating patella’s. This means Uilkossie experienced knee pain every time he walked or ran.

The only solution to this was to perform a patellate repair surgery on both hind legs. Good Cause was fortunate to support Uilkossie’s right patellate surgery. It is a complicated surgery, because, as Uilkossie is a larger breed, not many veterinarians are willing to perform this surgery.

Unfortunately, the surgery was only a partial success as the patella still luxates. Uilkossie is now on a special diet, Cartlifocus, to help him lose weight. Uilkossie is not a fat dog, he is big boned and the weight is very bad for his legs. The second surgery cannot be done at this stage and it is possible that he may need a rear wheelchair soon.

Tin Can Town works within the townships. They see the worst of the worse.
