Hershey’s Story: From Starving Stray to Hopeful Rescue Dog

Hershey was once a nameless shadow on the pavement.

Thin, frightened and desperately hungry, he was one of the many stray dogs forced to survive on South Africa’s streets. People passed him by while he searched for food, shelter and somewhere safe to rest.

Today, Hershey has a name, a full tummy and a heart filled with love.

But his journey reminds us why we cannot remain silent when animals are abandoned, neglected or left to suffer.

My Name Is Hershey

But for a long time, I didn’t have one.

I was just another shadow on the pavement – a skin-and-bones stray that many people walked past.

My journey hasn’t been easy. I once thought I had found my forever home, but I ended up lost and alone. I escaped into a world that wasn’t kind, one that forced me to survive on the streets.

I remember the hollow ache of hunger. I remember the cold rain soaking through my fur and the fear of not knowing where I would sleep. I was scared, lonely and unsure how much longer I could hold on.

Then, one rainy night, everything changed.

Two wonderful ladies didn’t simply see me and continue walking. They stopped. They reached out and rescued me.

They brought me to safety, where my tummy was filled with good food and my heart was surrounded by love.

From Frightened Stray to Social Butterfly

With proper care, patience and kindness, Hershey began to heal.

The frightened, underweight dog who had struggled to survive slowly blossomed into a sweet and loving companion. Today, he greets new faces with a wagging tail and a beautiful smile.

Hershey is a friendly, medium-sized mixed-breed boy who loves other dogs and enjoys being around children. He is sterilised and vaccinated, and he has no known special needs.

He is proof of what can happen when someone chooses to stop, care and take action.

However, there is still one thing missing from Hershey’s story: a forever home.

Still Waiting for His Forever Family

Hershey has been waiting at the rescue for a long time.

He has watched many other dogs leave with their new families while he continues to wait, hoping that one day someone will choose him.

He does not need much. He needs a warm bed, a safe home and a family who will love him for the rest of his life.

Hershey survived the streets. He conquered hunger, loneliness and the cold. Now, he is waiting for the loving future every animal deserves.

His bags are packed. His heart is open. He just needs someone to take him home.

Hershey’s Story Is One of Many

Hershey was fortunate. Someone saw him, rescued him and gave him another chance.

Countless other animals across South Africa are not as lucky.

Every day, animals are abandoned, starved, neglected, beaten and exploited. Many suffer silently while those responsible face little or no meaningful punishment.

Abandonment and neglect are forms of animal cruelty. Leaving an animal without food, shelter, medical care or protection can cause terrible suffering and may cost that animal its life.

Rescue organisations and compassionate individuals work tirelessly to save animals like Hershey, but they cannot solve this crisis alone.

South Africa needs stronger animal protection laws, more effective enforcement and serious consequences for those who abuse or neglect animals.
